CW July 2006Issue Number 7 July 2006 ISSN 10593802 Capecitabine plus Cisplatin in Advanced Gastric CancerCapecitabine (Xeloda®, Roche), an oral, tumor selective, fluoropyrimidine, in combination with cisplatin (Platinol®, Bristol-Myers Squibb) is a more effective, safer, simpler, and more convenient treatment option as first-line therapy in advanced gastric cancer, compared to the standard regimen of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin. This strategy strongly suggests that capecitabine should be the fluoropyrimidine of choice for advanced gastric cancer, according to results from a large-scale, multinational, comparative Phase III clinical trial presented at the 42nd annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
