CW April 2006Issue Number 4 April 2006 ISSN 10593802 FDA Approves Taxotere Combination for Advanced Gastric CancerThe US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval (March 23, 2006) of TAXOTERE® (docetaxel) in combination with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer, including cancer of the gastroesophageal junction, represents the beginning of a broadening of ?the whole horizon for advanced gastric cancer,? according to Jaffer Ajani, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX. The FDA approval is the first of an advanced stomach cancer treatment demonstrating a survival advantage in more than a decade. The indication is for patients who have not received prior chemotherapy for advanced disease. An estimated 21,860 Americans (13,510 men and 8,350 women) were diagnosed with gastric cancer during 2005, with an estimated 11,550 deaths.
