Zoledronic Acid Reduces Bone Loss in Men With Prostate Cancer Undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy

Prostate cancer patients undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are susceptible to significant bone mineral density (BMD) loss, which may result in an increased risk of fracture. Bisphosphonates prevent BMD loss when initiated concurrently with ADT. In a series of studies, the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid (Zometa) was shown to increase BMD and suppress bone turnover markers in men undergoing initial ADT and to prevent bone loss as well.
