Zoledronic Acid Provides Beneficial Effects on Skeletal Complications and Bone Markers in Prostate Cancer Patients With Bone Metastases

Bone metastases in men with prostate cancer may be associated with severe bone pain and the development of skeletal complications. Zoledronic acid (Zometa) has demonstrated a significant reduction in skeletal complications, whereas pamidronate (Aredia) has not. A comparison of these two bisphosphonates on skeletal complications and bone markers at six months shows the superiority of zoledronic acid. Zoledronic acid also appears to provide long-term reductions in skeletal morbidity for men with prostate cancer and bone metastases.
