CW February 2006Issue Number 2 February 2006 ISSN 10593802 Hypoxia and a New Cell Survival SignalLow oxygen concentration (hypoxia) as is found in the solid tumors, sends out signals in order to maintain cellular function under such stress. Hypoxic cells activates a protein called hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), which in turn stimulates synthesis of a large number of proteins needed to adapt to the new environment. A second pathway responding to hypoxia has been identified that inhibit global protein synthesis leading to energy conservation.
