Distance from Radiation Therapy Facility Affects Breast Cancer Treatment

Currently, for most breast cancer patients with early-stage disease, breast-conserving surgery with radiation is a standard treatment. However, though recommended by professionals, some women do not receive this treatment. Most often, the reason could be lack of insurance. However, studies suggest that one of the reasons is the location of the radiotherapy facility; the further away the facility is from the home of a patient, the less likely it is that she will receive breast-conserving surgery, because it requires multiple visits to a facility to receive radiation.
