CW September 2005Issue Number 9 September 2005 ISSN 10593802 Long-term Use of Aspirin and NSAIDs and the Risk of Colorectal CancerAspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are recommended chemopreventive agents for colorectal cancer. A long-term follow-up of participants in a clinical trial that is investigating the effect of duration and dose of aspirin indicates that a high dose, 325 mg or more per day, is required to provide any protection against colorectal cancer. Such a high dose may have serious adverse side effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding.
