Drug Approved to Protect Patients Treated with Chemotherapy from Infection

Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia is a major drawback in cancer treatment. Bioengineered colony stimulating factors have been developed that reduce neutropenia-associated adverse side effects. However, the first generation of agents approved for use needed to be administered daily. Now, a second-generation agent has been developed that can be as effective when used once per cycle of chemotherapy.
