CW September 2005Issue Number 9 September 2005 ISSN 10593802 A Molecular Pathway that Leads to Breast Cancer RecurrenceOne of the mechanisms cancer cells use in favor of their survival is to induce the expression of dormant genes, which have critical functions only during a specific period of embryogenesis. Expression of these genes in the adult stage is detrimental to the cells. One such gene, Snail, is found to be expressed in the breast tumor cells of those women who show a higher rate of recurrence compared to those women with low Snail expression in their original tumor. This suggests that Snail may be considered as a potential target for cancer therapy.
