CW August 2005Issue Number 8 August 2005 ISSN 10593802 Revolutionary Respiratory Gating Technology in Cancer TreatmentAdvanced diagnostic imaging has made it possible to localize a very small tumor that can be destroyed by a focused high dose of externally directed radiation. However, tumors in respiratory and bowel organs move during respiration, producing a significant problem in focused radiotherapy. A respiratory gating system has been developed that enables the physicians to target tumors by adjusting to the patient?s breathing pattern with a millimeter of accuracy.
