Non-invasive Prostate Cancer Treatment

Prostate cancer, the most common cancer found in men in North America, is often treated with surgery or radiation of various sorts. These treatments induce adverse effects. Techniques are being tested to minimize complications of treatment. One such strategy uses high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to destroy cancer cells. This is a minimally invasive treatment with a substantially lower risk of adverse effects and has been used successfully in Europe. However, it is an investigational treatment in the US. Preliminary studies in animal model and human subject suggest it to be safe.
