Drug-Induced Bone Loss an Increasing Problem for Men with Prostate Cancer

Osteoporosis and osteopenia triggered by androgen-suppressing therapies such as GnRH analogs are common in men with prostate cancer. Bone loss correlates clearly with duration of androgen-suppressing treatment, and begins shortly after the start of treatment. Urologists are recognizing the need to assess bone mineral density prior to and during the course of treatment. In some cases, use of bisphosphonates, vitamin D, and calcium supplements is warranted.
