Laparoscopic Surgery for Colon Cancer Gaining Favor

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique that is widely used in cardiology, gynecology, and gastric procedures. But acceptance of this procedure for the management of cancer has been slow because of the complexity of the technique, requirement of technical advances and training, and fear for oncological safety. The laparoscopic technique has a long learning curve and should be offered if sufficient expertise is available. Reports from multicenter studies suggest that this procedure is as safe and effective as the traditional open surgery.
