CW February 2005Issue Number 2 February 2005 ISSN 10593802 Bone Loss With Femara Countered by Intravenous Zoledronic Acid Twice YearlyThe cessation of ovarian estrogen production in postmenopausal women is often associated with bone loss. In such women being treated for breast cancer with aromatase inhibitors, more complete elimination of estrogen activity can lead to accelerated bone loss. Treatment with an intravenous bisphosphonate, zoledronic acid (Zometa, Novartis) however, may prevent this cancer therapy-induced bone loss (CTIB), according to a 27th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Zoledronic acid is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.
