CW August 2004Issue Number 8 August 2004 ISSN 10593802 Protein Shift Predicts Brain Cancer GradeBeneath the surface layer of blood vessels is a thin membrane, the basement membrane, which contains a protein called laminin. A subset of these proteins, laminin-8, is found to be over expressed in aggressive brain tumors. This protein may facilitate tumor invasion and contribute to tumor growth after therapy. Therefore, laminin-8 may be used as a predictor of tumor recurrence and patient survival as well as a potential molecular target for brain tumor therapy.
