Smoking has Lasting Effects on Genes

Cigarette smoke can permanently damage important genes in certain individuals that can make them susceptible to developing lung cancer. This may explain why former smokers, even those who quit smoking decades ago, continue to be more likely to develop lung cancer than individuals who never smoked.
