CW July 2004Issue Number 7 July 2004 ISSN 10593802 Imatinib Targets Prostate and Brain CancersImatinib (Gleevec) is one of the first oncology drugs that validate rational drug design based on an understanding of how some cancer cells work. Imatinib, a signal transduction inhibitor, interferes with the pathways that signal the growth of some tumor cells. It targets activity of several enzymes called tyrosine kinases that play an important role within certain cancer cells, including prostate cancer and the most common adult brain tumor, glioblastoma.
