Anti-inflammatory Drugs Can Prevent Post-operative Metastasis

Wound healing at the surgical site attracts cells that produce cytokines favorable for tumor growth. If cancer cells contaminate the surgical field, as can happen by spillage of tumor cells or if residual tumor is left after surgery, the growth of these cancer cells can be accelerated by the microenvironment at the wound site. Induction of cyclo-oxygenase-2 is a key mechanism in wound healing. Celecoxib, an inhibitor of this enzyme, is found to inhibit wound healing as well as cancer cell growth associated with surgical wounds.
