New Mechanism for Anticancer Action of Tamoxifen

Tamoxifen, the well recognized antiestrogen, is known to bind with the receptor for the hormone, thus preventing its growth stimulating effect on breast cancer cells. A new study reveals that in addition, tamoxifen stimulates the expression of the tumor suppressor gene maspin. This observation may lead to the development of a new class of drugs targeting the maspin gene.
