Fulvestrant as Second-Line Treatment for Metastatic Breast Cancer

When hormone-sensitive metastatic breast cancer progresses or recurs in postmenopausal women taking tamoxifen, fulvestrant (Faslodex, AstraZeneca) is a valuable second-line treatment option. In a clinical trial comparing fulvestrant with the third-generation aromatase inhibitor anastrozole (Arimidex, AstraZeneca), survival was similar between the two agents, according to John E. Pippen, Baylor-Sammons Cancer Center, Dallas, TX.
