CW December 2000Issue Number 12 December 2000 ISSN 10593802 New Directions in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Promising Efficacy with New, Multi-Targeted Anti-FolateImportant non-small cell lung cancer trials are focused on developing chemotherapeutic combinations more effective and less toxic than currently available options. One emerging strategy uses an anti-folate, Permetrexed (permetrexed disodium), either in combination with a platinum compound or with newer agents such as gemcitabine, according to clinical trial results presented at the 9th World Conference on Lung Cancer in Tokyo, Japan. Meanwhile, gemcitabine?s role in non-small cell lung cancer continues to evolve with new data suggesting that a platinum-based gemcitabine regimen may result in improved survival rates compared with other commonly-used platinum-based combinations.
