CW November 2000Issue Number 11 November 2000 ISSN 10593802 Gene Therapy: A Personal ViewThe still futuristic vision of correcting genetic defects, from hemophilia to cancer and almost every other major human disease, is raising expectations ? both in the public and in researchers. Most readers will think, seeing the title: what, not again ?! but it is appropriate, from time to time, to slow down, look back and ?smell the roses?. The Genome Project has been finalized before time; the lays do not realize that this is only the beginning of a beginning and there is far too much happy talk. Anyone trying to apply the knowledge already accumulated will find that the devil of uncertainty lurks in the details. To quote O. W. Holmes: Certainty generally is an illusion.
