Gene Therapy: A Personal View

The still futuristic vision of correcting genetic defects, from hemophilia to cancer and almost every other major human disease, is raising expectations ? both in the public and in researchers. The Genome Project has been finalized before time; the lays do not realize that this is only the beginning of a beginning and there is far too much happy talk. Anyone trying to apply the knowledge already accumulated will find that the devil of uncertainty lurks in the details. To quote O. W. Holmes: Certainty generally is an illusion.
