Dysplasia of the hematopoietic system has become, in the last two decades, an issue of growing frequency and importance. Ever since exact criteria for myelodysplasias had been established by the French-American-British Cooperative Group, diagnostic procedures, prognosis, therapy and supportive measures are being continuously refined. It is understood any "state of the art" describes a fleeting, changing and easily obsolete phase, but it is sometimes necessary to pause and look into the past and peek into the future.
