Glucocorticoids Promote Prostate Cancer

A specific mutation in the androgen receptor gene makes it susceptible to cortisol stimulation. Cortisol is a glucocorticoid, a hormone substantial level of which circulates in the adult. The underlying cause of transition from an androgen-dependent to an androgen independent prostate cancer during androgen ablation therapy may be due to accumulation of this specific mutation.
