Better Scheduling of Radiation Therapy for Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Improved local control and better disease-free survival can be achieved in locally advanced head and neck cancer patients by changing the scheduling of radiation treatment. Total dose delivered can be increased with hyperfractionation by keeping the overall time of treatment as in the standard schedule (7 weeks). Similar benefit can also be obtained by using an accelerated schedule with a shorter period of time (6 weeks) with part of the treatment delivered once a day and the other part delivered twice a day, 5 days a week, to a total radiation dose comparable to the standard schedule.
