CW July 2000Issue Number 7 July 2000 ISSN 10593802 Two Thumbs Up for Lung Cancer TreatmentsWhile one study shows unprecedented results in the treatment of late-stage non-small cell lung cancer patients given docetaxel, another shows that newer combination chemotherapies only provide these patients about two months more survival than drugs used five years ago. Administering docetaxel immediately after traditional chemotherapy and radiation, resulted in a two-year survival of 48% and median survival of 20 months for 83 patients, reports David Gandara, Director of Clinical Research at the University of California Davis Cancer Center. On the other hand, Joan Schiller, professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin found no clear winners among three chemotherapy combinations: cisplatin and gemcitabine, cisplatin and docetaxel, and carboplatin and Taxol ? when compared to a control of cisplatin plus Taxol.
