The Effect of Tamoxifen on Serum Biochemistry

The use of nonsteroidal antiestrogens, mainly Tamoxifen, is widespread; so are our often enthusiastic abuse of laboratory tests, in order to diagnose, document or follow-up other diseases or the effect of the treatment itself. A variety of biochemical parameters, ranging from hormones to proteins to lipids, are being routinely determined and often uncritically evaluated. Some of the effects of Tamoxifen (namely on certain hormones) are well understood, others remain contradictory. Obviously, the metabolisms of the individual patient as well as the dosage and length of administration of the drug influence the levels of many laboratory results.
