CW July 2000Issue Number 7 July 2000 ISSN 10593802 Drugs to Treat Alocoholism May Help Cancer PatientsDisulfiram (AntabuseTM) used to treat chronic alcoholism may have a new function, inhibition of a potent drug efflux pump. An energy-driven pump controlled by P-glycoprotein (P-gp) that actively removes varieties of cytotoxic agents including chemotherapeutic drugs is found to be inhibited by disulfiram. Treatment of P-gp-expressing cells with disulfiram increases the sensitivity of cytotoxic agents.
