CW July 2000Issue Number 7 July 2000 ISSN 10593802 Continuous and Intermittent Administration of Iressa and Tumor StabilityEarly trials of Iressa (ZD1839), a novel anticancer compound, are revealing that the compound has encouraging anti-tumor activity and produces disease stabilization in patients with specific types of tumors. Iressa, which is available as an oral agent, is a selective inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase-1 (EGFR-TK1). By inhibiting EGFR-TK1, Iressa interrupts tumor cell growth and division. In early clinical trials, the compound is showing activity against malignant tumors known to overexpress EGFR-TK1.
