CW June 2000Issue Number 6 June 2000 ISSN 10593802 Reports from ASCO MeetingMore than 20,000 cancer professionals from around the world gathered in New Orleans to discuss the latest advances in cancer research at the 36th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). This year?s ASCO meeting included new research relating to every category of clinical cancer care, with over 2,600 abstracts presented and published. Some of the research featured provided what may become the new standard treatment option for patients with excess calcium in the blood after a tumor has metastasized and continuing success of a revolutionary tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment for leukemia. In addition to significant advances in cancer treatment, the meeting featured important research aimed at improving patients? quality of life, reflecting the increasing focus on these issues among cancer care professionals, and included a new non-estrogenic drug to treat hot flashes.
