New Bone Therapy May Become Standard of Care

A potent new bisphosphonate may soon become the standard of care for patients with excess calcium in the blood after a tumor has spread to the bone. Pooled data from two multicentered trials analyzing 275 patients shows that either a single intravenous dose of zoledronic acid (Zometa, Novartis) or a five minute infusion of the drug was far superior, and more convenient, to the current treatment standard, a single dose of pamidronate infused over two hours.
