CW June 2000Issue Number 6 June 2000 ISSN 10593802 New Bone Therapy May Become Standard of CareA potent new bisphosphonate may soon become the standard of care for patients with excess calcium in the blood after a tumor has spread to the bone. Pooled data from two multicentered trials analyzing 275 patients shows that either a single intravenous dose of zoledronic acid (Zometa, Novartis) or a five minute infusion of the drug was far superior, and more convenient, to the current treatment standard, a single dose of pamidronate infused over two hours.
