Is Monkey Virus Becoming a Transmissible Human Pathogen?

A virus is usually species-specific. But viral DNA from one species can be integrated to the DNA of another species and be expressed. Simian virus 40 (SV40), a polyomavirus, infects rhesus monkeys and induces cancer in experimental animals. It is believed to be spreading in humans. The viral DNA sequences and the viral antigen responsible for carcinogenesis are detected in several types of human cancer cells.
