Preoperative Detection of Cancer Cells May Indicate Micrometstasis

Ovarian cancer is largely confined to the abdomen and pelvis and is thought to spread primarily by direct cell seeding throughout the abdominal cavity. Cancer cells are not expected to be present in bone marrow or peripheral blood at the early stage of the disease and before surgery. However, ovarian cancer cells have been detected in these two tissues more frequently than expected. Researchers are investigating the clinical significance of this micrometastasisis in patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent ovarian cancer prior to surgical intervention.
