Combined Immuno-Hormonal Therapy for Carcinoid Syndrome

The combination of the immunotherapeutic agent interferon alpha (INF-α) (Roferon-A®, Roche) and octreotide acetate (Sandostatin®, Novartis), a long-acting octapeptide with pharmacologic actions mimicking those of the natural hormone somatostatin, has been shown to be an active therapeutic regimen in patients with carcinoid syndrome and increases the median duration of survival after diagnosis significantly. These patients have also proven to be refractory to octreotide alone, INF-&alpha alone, or cytoxic chemotherapy alone. This information comes from a presentation given at the California Carcinoid Fighters Seminar 2003 ?Carcinoid Treatment Today & Tomorrow.?
