CW September 2003Issue Number 9 September 2003 ISSN 10593802 FDA Approves a Drug for Multiple Myeloma: A Proteasome InhibitorFor the first time in over a decade, The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved the drug Velcade for the treatment of multiple myeloma patients. Velcade belongs to a new class of medicines called proteasome inhibitors. Proteasome are molecular machines present in all cells and enable the destruction of endogenous proteins. In multiple myeloma patients, Velcade restricts the growth and proliferation of cancer cells by restoring cell suicide, and halting cell cycle, cell adhesion and angiogenesis.
