Oxaliplatin-Based Combination for Recurrent Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

Oxaliplatin (Eloxatin™, Sanofi Synthelabo), a new platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent with antitumor activity against colorectal cancer, when used with the standard chemotherapeutic approach of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and leucovorin (LV) in a combination called FOLFOX-4, significantly delays tumor progression, offers a better response rate, and improves relief from tumor-related symptoms in patients with progressive, metastatic colorectal cancer, when compared to two other treatment regimens, according to results from a phase III clinical trial.
