CW July 2003Issue Number 7 July 2003 ISSN 10593802 Low-grade Uterine Stromal Cancer and Estrogen Replacement TherapyEstrogen, which stimulates uterine cells to grow, may be detrimental in patients with low-grade endometrial stromal cancer. This cancer is very rare and difficult to diagnose. It can recur as late as 30 years after initial treatment. The only treatment is total hysterectomy. Patients who receive estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) after total abdominal surgery have a greater chance of recurrence compared to those who did not receive ERT. Progestins seem to prevent recurrence if received as adjuvant therapy.
