Two large international phase III trials show that oxaliplatin (Eloxatin) or capecitabine (Xeloda) as adjuvant therapy for colon cancer improves treatment outcomes. The oxaliplatin-containing combination known as FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin) reduced the risk of recurrence by 23% compared to the current treatment standard of 5-FU/leucovorin in a study of more than 2,000 patients from 20 countries who had already undergone surgery to remove tumors. Similarly, capecitabine offers an improved safety profile over 5-FU/leucovorin in a study of nearly 2,000 patients from 164 centers worldwide who had resected tumors.
