CW June 2003Issue Number 6 June 2003 ISSN 10593802 Two Adjuvant Colon Cancer Treatments Show PromiseTwo large international phase III trials show that oxaliplatin (Eloxatin) or capecitabine (Xeloda) as adjuvant therapy for colon cancer improves treatment outcomes. The oxaliplatin-containing combination known as FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin) reduced the risk of recurrence by 23% compared to the current treatment standard of 5-FU/leucovorin in a study of more than 2,000 patients from 20 countries who had already undergone surgery to remove tumors. Similarly, capecitabine offers an improved safety profile over 5-FU/leucovorin in a study of nearly 2,000 patients from 164 centers worldwide who had resected tumors.
