CW June 2003Issue Number 6 June 2003 ISSN 10593802 Treatable GIST Vastly UnderdiagnosedThe mostly unrecognized, thought-to-be rare gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) ? now treatable with imatinib (Gleevec) ? is as common as Hodgkin?s disease and chronic myeloid leukemia. A Swedish epidemiologic study histologically reevaluated about 1,000 cases of GIST and found that nearly three quarters of them had been wrongly classified as other tumors, according to a report at the recent American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting. That translates into an incidence of at least 4,600 new GIST cases annually in the US.
