CW May 2003Issue Number 5 May 2003 ISSN 10593802 Targeted Therapy Wins Approval for Non-Small Cell Lung CancerThe FDA granted approval in early May for gefitinib (Iressa) as a treatment of last resort for lung cancer patients who had failed two or more types of chemotherapy, despite findings that treatment with a combination of gefitinib and standard platinum-based chemotherapy failed to improve survival for newly diagnosed patients. The new drug may be best suited as a chemopreventive or as maintenance therapy after upfront chemotherapy, according to oncology pharmacy experts.
