E. coli Toxin Protects against Colon Cancer

The toxin produced by the common gut bacteria E coli that causes diarrhea may protect against colorectal cancer. The toxin that binds to specific cell surface receptors stimulates a cascade of reaction causing Ca ions to flow into the cancer cells that inhibit DNA synthesis. The result is a slow down of cancer cell division.
