Molecular Marker for Prognosis of Melanoma

Overexpression of a protein, HDM2, in patients with melanoma appears to indicate a better disease-free as well as overall survival rate. This protein is overexpressed in certain other types of cancer and thought to be an early event in the oncogenic transformation of normal cells to cancer cells. Present data, however, contradict this belief.
