Various Surgical Incisions for Staging Uterine Cancer

Surgical staging for gynecologic cancers require abdominal incisions. Vertical midline incisions are generally used because they give better exposures to the abdominal tissues. However, evidence suggests that a low transverse incision known as the Pfannenstiel incision is as effective in performing abdominal surgery required in staging gynecologic cancers as the midline surgery, and it may even be superior in some respects. For example, it reduces hospital stay considerably, may be less painful, causes less blood loss during surgery, and is cosmetically pleasing.
