CW March 2003Issue Number 3 March 2003 ISSN 10593802 ?Single-Minded Genes? as Tumor MarkersGenes associated with tumor markers are rapidly becoming inflationary; the sequencing of the human genome, while explaining preciously little, has led to ?data-mining? and the deposition of thousands of Expressed Sequence Tags (EST) ? of both known and novel genes. Bioinformatics of the CGAP database led to the prediction (and later confirmation) of single minded genes and the sim2 gene was born: located at the minimum region of chromosome 21, it is readily implicated in the Down?s Syndrome Critical Region. This expression of sim-2 in selected, but not all solid tumors offers both diagnostic and therapeutic potential.
