CW March 2003Issue Number 3 March 2003 ISSN 10593802 Prediction of Recurrence and Mortality in Node-Negative Breast CancerAt present, node negative, high-risk breast cancer patients (NNBC) cannot be recognized with sufficient accuracy that would guide treatment and indicate prognosis. The general assumption that node-negativity is always (!?) a positive sign is questionable; there are subgroups of NNBC in whom the recurrence rate during the first five years after diagnosis is 30%. It would be considered progress to identify patients with a greater risk of breast cancers by molecular markers; at present, it appears that C-myc could serve this purpose.
