CW March 2003Issue Number 3 March 2003 ISSN 10593802 Bioengineered Cytokine Wards off InfectionCancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy are at high risk for developing bacterial infection. One possible cause of such bacteremia may be the breakdown of the integrity of the intestinal membrane that allows bacteria from the gut to migrate to the blood stream. Interleukin-11, a cytokine, is found to protect the epithelial membrane; and it reduces morbidity and mortality due to bacteremia in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
