Update on the Treatment of Gastrointestinal Malignancies

Despite the increasing availability of new cytotoxic agents, gastrointestinal malignancies remain incurable, and patients? survival is short. Although gastric cancer itself is decreasing in frequency, its morbidity is easily made up for with colorectal and pancreatic malignancies that show no sign of abating. Increasingly sophisticated diagnostic techniques and a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach with novel treatment modalities have only caused a negligible dent in the overall mortality. The need for more effective therapy is as great as ever.
