CW February 2003Issue Number 2 February 2003 ISSN 10593802 Third-Generation Aromatase InhibitorsBreast cancer incidence, at least among Western women, is still on the rise, but mortality from this disease has been dropping steadily for the last few years. Improved survival is probably the result of several factors, mainly earlier diagnosis by mammography and other screening methods and the widespread use of adjuvant endocrine therapy. The last two decades have seen the rapid and successful introduction of various antiestrogenic compounds, all aimed at decreasing the amount of circulating estrogens and their effect. Progress in the development of well-tolerated, first-line or adjuvant drugs continues.
