Dose-Dense Chemotherapy for Advanced Breast Cancer

In the 1980s, mathematical models predicted that increased dose-density would augment chemotherapy power. Concern over the potential for causing neutropenia (a decline in white blood cells called neutrophils) held back research efforts, however. The subsequent availability of filgrastim (Neupogen), also known as G-CSF (granulocyte-colony stimulating factor), which stimulates formation of neutrophils, allows for the testing of dose-dense treatment schedules.
