What Does the STI in STI-571 (Imatinib) Stand For?

Now that Imatinib (Gleevec), the former STI-571, is considered the drug of choice for patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), does STI stand for ?Stop Transplants Immediately?? New 18-month data show that imatinib is nine times more likely than the current standard of interferon-alpha plus cytosine arabinoside (IFN + Ara-C) to successfully treat newly diagnosed CML. But it may be years before clinicians have enough data to predict who will need a transplant, and when, leading one researcher to suggest that STI should stand for ?Start Transplants Intelligently.?
